John Thompson was born on 2 March 1797 at Lycoming Creek, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of James Thompson and Christiana [—?—]. John Thompson married, at age 30, Susan Updegraff, age 16, daughter of Thomas Updegraff and Elizabeth Rothrock, on Thursday, 8 March 1827 at Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 John Thompson died on 16 June 1866 at age 69 years, 3 months and 14 days.2,1
John Thompson was born on Lycoming Creek, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, and was a member of one of the pioneer families of the West Branch valley. He learned the tanner's trade and followed that business for a number of years in Clinton County. In 1841 he settled on a farm in Muncy Township, Lycoming County, and in 1856 he moved to Williamsport and retired from active business. He married Susan, daughter of Thomas Updegraff, of York County, Pennsylvania, an early settler of this county. She was born in Williamsport, and reared a family of eight children. Mr. Thompson died in 1869, his wife surviving him until 1872. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In early life he was a Whig, but upon the formation of the Republican party he became identified with that organization, and ever afterwards voted the Republican ticket.
