Darris Metzger Hauser1

     Darris Metzger Hauser was born on 31 August 1928 at Jersey Shore, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Lester Romic Hauser and Florence Amelia Metzger. Darris Metzger Hauser married, at age 20, Clara Ulmer, daughter of Watson J. Ulmer and Mary A. Getz, on Wednesday, 6 July 1949.1 Darris Metzger Hauser died on 8 August 2003 at Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, at age 74 years, 11 months and 8 days. He was buried on 12 August 2003 in the Oak Hill Cemetery, located in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
     Darris Metzger Hauser was known as Reverend professionally. His obituary was published on 9 August 2003 in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, printed in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His obituary stated:

     Darris "Doc" Metzger Hauser, 74, of 7 Packer Ave., Towanda, passed peacefully into the presence of his Savior on Friday morning, Aug. 8, 2003, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

     Born Aug. 31, 1928, in Jersey Shore, he was a son of the late Lester Romic and Florence Amelia Metzger Hauser. Throughout his life he greatly influenced the lives of many people as pastor of the Independent Baptist Church of Towanda for 43 years.

     In 1949, Doc graduated from Practical Bible Training School of Johnson City, N.Y. He was a man of Godly character as husband, father, grandfather, friend and pastor. He served many years as a highly respected trustee of Baptist Bible College of Clarks Summit, from which he received an honorary doctorate in May of 2001. Over the years he served many terms as a council member of the Pennsylvania Association of Regular Baptist Churches and was actively involved with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches. In his retirement he continued in minstry as the state representative of Pennsylvania Baptists for Life and Families.

     As an active member of the Towanda community, he prayed with and informally counseled many young men and coaches through the years as the Towanda football team chaplain. His vital interest in Towanda’s sports program was readily appreciated by those who experienced his support.

     Many missionaries worldwide have greatly benefited from his lifelong passion for missions.

     Doc has been much loved and respected all of his life by his family, church, friends and associates. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed woodworking and riding motorcycles. He will be very greatly missed.

     He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Clara Ulmer Hauser; three sons and their wives, Kevin and Cynthia (Fink) Hauser of Jersey Shore, Leland and Rebecca (Franklin) Hauser of Wysox and Donn and Lynette (Frost) Hauser of Towanda; seven grandchildren, Michael and his wife, Jasmine; Amanda, Elizabeth, Darren, Rachel, Scott and Stacey; four brothers and their wives, Duane and Eva (Feenstra) Hauser of Avis, Dean and Rosemary (Amble) Hauser of Farrandsville, Derwin "Jake" and Rosemarie (Beckley) Hauser of Bradenton, Fla., and Doren and Joanne (Crayton) Hauser of Ulysses; one sister and her husband, Lillian "Sue" Hauser Huff and John Huff of Waynesboro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

     He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Romic Hauser in 1986 and by his mother, Florence Amelia Metzger Hauser in 1993.

     The family will receive friends on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Independent Baptist Church, Cherry Street, Towanda. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m., at the church, with his son, Pastor Donn Hauser, officiating, assisted by Pastor Lloyd Vaughn. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda.

     The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Independent Baptist Church, Cherry St., Towanda, PA 18848, in Pastor Darris M. Hauser’s memory.2
